April Discipline With Purpose Skill -- Communication
The 5th grade students are practicing these steps to great communication:
1. Recognize and use proper verbal and non-verbal expressions.
2. Use good listening skills.
3. Respect different points of view.
4. Avoid sarcasm, put-downs, and gossip.
5. Ask others questions that begin with "w" or "h" to discover what is important them.
6. End on a positive note.
7. Thank others for communicating.
Study Hall is offered Tuesday and Thursday after school from 3:20 - 4:00. Students need to be picked up between 4 and 4:05 at the south (side) door. Monday after school students can stay for math club. We will have activities that extend and develop math skills. Math Club is from 3:20 - 4:00. Students need to be picked up at the south door by 4:05. Upcoming Tests If you follow your child's planner, you will be able to keep track of when the tests are going to be. Miss McDermott and I teach the unit and have the students complete "study guides" or "notes" assignments. We then check these assignments so students get feedback and know the mistakes they have made. We often give the correct answers in class, but by 5th grade, students are expected to take initiative and fix their own mistakes. Students should be asking questions in class if something is not completely understood. These questions require some study time and note review on their own, so that he/she knows what questions to ask. After the test, I require students to get signatures so that parents know about student progress. | 5th grade science students will be having "Mad Science Mondays". Students will pose a science question to the class and then share a 1 - 5 minute demonstration to help visualize and answer the question. Mrs. Bishop has MANY ideas and resources for these demonstrations and the students will be given some time to research in school. Of course, parents may be interested in helping with this assignment and that is OKAY too!
