What's Going On In Our Classroom
On Friday, March 25, Mr. O'Malley was a guest reader in our classroom. Mr. O ' Malley read one of his favorites, The Giving Tree, which he and his children have memorized because they love it so much. He shared with the students to read every day, and he recommends 15 - 20 pages per day. Mr. O ' Malley is the nephew of our own, Sister Carol O.S.M. Thanks for sharing your time with us!

On Thursday, March 24, the fifth grade visited the Joslyn Museum.

Jesse stands with Dr. Ishii-Jordon from Creighton University. Dr. Ishii-Jordon visited out classroom on Friday, March 4 as part of Holy Name's Read to Kids program which is held each March. She shared one chapter of Farewell to Manzanar by Jeanne Wakatsuki, an historical fiction book set in the United States during World War II in a Japanese Internment camp. A big thanks is extended to Dr. Ishii-Jordon for visiting our classroom and capturing our minds with such a great book choice!

On Wednesday, January 12, 2011, Nyasibit Kume received an award from the American Red Cross for her "Hero" essay. Nyasibit wrote about her mother, Nyajuok Kuernyin, as her hero. The following are some of the words which she wrote in her essay.
"She is caring and loving. She means a lot to me because she is the only living parent I have. I know it is very hard for her to do everything on her own, so my sisters and I try to help her out. She does so much for us and others, and yet she doesn’t get rewarded. I really wish I could reward her…and I will when I’m older. My mom is my hero and I hope to someday be her hero too!"
On Wednesday, November 10 the fourth and fifth grade students traveled to Fontenelle Forest. The fifth grade program, "Predator and Prey", very creatively taught the students about the relationships (predator and prey) in forests and especially at Fontenelle Forest. The students took part in a "Law and Order" Fontenelle Forest which included Kamryn as the Forest, Jesse as the deer, and Jerrika as the wolf. The presenters were the lawyers and judge. Poor Jesse. His deer wife was starving because of overpopulation of deer. Poor Kamryn. She just couldn't grow enough vegetation to keep up with the deer. Poor Jerrika. She just had to move out because the humans don't like her! If you have any questions, ask your child--they should know how Fontenelle Forest solved the problem and continues to manage this, real problem in their forest.
We also were able to walk the trails for about an hour with a ranger leading us. They were able to teach us many interesting facts about the forest while we hiked. This is always a favorite field trip for me. I hope the students go back again on their own someday!
On October 4, our class attended the 2010 Agriculture Awareness Festival at the Agriculture Research and Development Center near Mead, Nebraska. The Ag Awareness Coalition sponsors this day and their mission is to increase youths' knowledge and understanding about agriculutural concepts by cooperatively bringing together several disciplines. We had eight sessions which included learning about farming crops and raising pigs and cows. We learned about ruminent animals and how these animals have special stomachs for digesting grass and hay. The students thought the field trip was interesting because of the new information about farms and animals. On the other hand, the farm could be "stinky" and some parts were "gross" and those took some getting used to!

When asked, "What is the most important lesson Holy Name School has taught you?" the students had this to say:
Seamus--Reading, otherwise I would never be able to study or read books
Emile--Responsibility, because it helps me bocome a good leader and citizen
Nyasibit--Citizenship and I use my manners all of the time
Jesse--the Golden Rule, we treat people the way we want to be treated
Llyia--celebrating Jesus!
Assignment Books:
Please check your child's assignment book as often as possible. Ask your child questions about the topics being studied and to explain the math concepts to you. Completed assignments are kept in the homework folder on the "complete" side. Please check to see that all the assignments from the planner are completed and in the folder, ready to be turned-in by 8:20 the next day.
Friday Folders:
Each Friday special newsletters, notes, forms, and a collection of the week's work is sent home in a "Friday Folder". You are asked to take the materials out and go through them. A signature chart is attached inside the folder so that the parent can sign to verify reading these materials. These need to be returned as soon as possible, no later than Wednesday.
Questions?????
Ask them!!

On Friday, October 8, these four students (Jessica, Kamryn, Nyasibit, and Jacob) gave speeches as the 5th grade nominees for Holy Name's student council. Next Wednesday we will find out the results of the vote that took place after the speeches. Good luck to all four students who had excellent ideas and motivating speeches!
